Privacy Policy

Retrn is a QR-based lost-and-found service. Each Retrn tag carries a unique code. When someone finds a tagged item and scans it, they can send an anonymous message to the item's owner — without downloading an app or handing over their own personal details.

This page explains what information we collect, why, and the choices you have. If anything here is unclear, contact us — details are at the bottom.

Who this covers

Owners and finders

There are two kinds of people who use Retrn, and we treat their information differently:

Owners create an account to register tags and receive messages about their items.
Finders simply scan a tag and message the owner. Finders do not create an account and are not required to give us their name, email, or any personal detail.

What we collect

Information we collect

From owners

Email address (required) — used to create your account and log you in.
Name, phone number, drop-off address (optional) — you can choose to add these so a finder can identify or reach you. You are free to leave them blank.
Photos of your item — a picture you upload of the item a tag is attached to, so it can be recognised.
Item details — a name or description you give an item.
Precise location (optional) — only if you tap the button to share a location, such as a drop-off point. It is never taken in the background.

From finders

Messages you send to an owner through the tag's page.
Precise location (optional) — only if you tap the button to share where the item was found. Nothing is collected unless you choose to send it.
A device session identifier — a random ID stored in your own browser so your conversation stays connected to you on that device. It is not linked to your name and requires no sign-in.

Why we use it

We use your email only for your account and login. We do not send marketing or promotional emails.

Sharing

How your information is shared

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

Between finders and owners

The purpose of Retrn is to connect the two of you. When a finder messages an owner, the message and any location the finder chooses to share are shown to that owner. The contact details an owner sees are limited to what the owner has chosen to make visible for that tag. A finder stays anonymous unless they decide to share more.

Service providers

We rely on a few trusted companies to operate Retrn. They only process data on our behalf:

Supabase — database and account storage.
Netlify / Cloudflare — hosting of our web pages.
Google Play — app distribution.
OneSignal — sending owners notifications about their items, where enabled.

We may also disclose information if the law requires us to.

Storage & security

Where your data lives

Your data is stored on Supabase servers in the South Asia (Mumbai, India) region. Data sent between your device and our services is encrypted in transit over a secure connection.

No online service can promise perfect security, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.

Retention

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. When you delete your account, we remove your personal information, except anything we are required to keep by law.

Your rights

Your choices and rights

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can:

Access the personal information we hold about you.
Ask us to correct information that is wrong or out of date.
Ask us to delete your information.
Raise a grievance about how your data is handled.

Deleting your account

Account and data deletion

You can delete your account and its associated data in two ways:

Using the delete option inside the Retrn app.
By emailing a deletion request to hello.retrn@gmail.com.

Children

Age requirement

Retrn is intended for users aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and if we learn we have, we will delete it.

Updates to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. Please check back occasionally.
